Professor Rebecca Gowland and Dr Alexis Skinner talk about a new project at Durham University which uses computer modelling developed for the COVID-19 outbreak to simulate the spread of the Black Death, arguably ‘the greatest disaster in documented human history’.  We will hear how the team is developing a ‘digital twin’ of mid-14th-century England (modelling the settlements, occupations, behaviour and movements of a population in the millions) and showing how this can be used to investigate both the likely means of transmission and social connections in medieval society.

Light refreshments served.  Cost £10 member, £12 non-member.
