Four simple words which would have made a huge difference to how the late Dr Kate Granger MBE received her diagnosis of terminal cancer.  From then on, she spearheaded a drive for more compassionate care which starts with a simple introduction.  Now there is a worldwide campaign with celebrity backers including among others, Kylie Minogue and Sir Steve Redgrave.  Kate’s widower, Chris Pointon will explain how the story unfolded.  Refreshments served.  Cost £8 member, £10 non-member.

The mills of the Washburn Valley have almost disappeared leaving little trace.  The huge mill complex at Salts Mill may have echoes of West House Mill at Blubberhouses.  Join our guided walk (Washburn guide) around Saltaire, a World Heritage Site to see the mill workers’ village and imagine the streets full of women heading to work in the mill.  We then join a Salt’s Mill guide on a curated hour long art tour of the 1853 Gallery where you will see the world’s largest permanent collection of work by Bradford born David Hockney.  You might choose to eat at Salt’s Diner (own cost) or perhaps take a walk and a picnic to nearby Roberts Park.  Accessible by train or car. Yorkshire woman Deborah McAndrew, playwright, actor and Chancellor of Leeds Trinity University from 2018 to 2023, offers an insight into the writing process when dramatising a work of literature for the theatre.  Deborah is co-founder and Joint Artistic Director of the Claybody Theatre Company.  Join this interactive session by thinking of your favourite novel and how it would make the transition onto the stage?  If time allows, a Q&A about her wider work and career will follow.  Refreshments served.  Cost £8 member, £10 non-member.

A distant view of the “golf balls” gives an opportunity to briefly consider the role of the Women’s Peace Camp (please see our temporary exhibition in the Centre).  We then take a walk via quiet lanes, fields, stiles, woods and include a visit to Thornthwaite Church which has, over the course of its history, celebrated the lives of five interesting women.  About 5.5 miles.  Lunch served back at the Heritage Centre.  Cost £12 member, £15 non-member.
